The sculptures of Richard Sturgeon are inspired by the landscape of Northern Ontario where the artist was raised.

As a young child, Richard discovered the magic of creating objects with his hands and spent his time carving wood. He eventually made art a priority in his life and pursued metal and welding training. It was the work of the great American sculptor Alexander Calder that inspired Richard to give his sculptures movement.

Today, the artist works out of his studio along Lake Huron in Ontario. He loves to explore the shorelines on lake Huron and the landscape of the Bruce Peninsula to find ideas and objects to integrate into his sculptures.

Flowing lines, motion and balance define form and space in his sculptures exploring emotional connections, community and reflections in our place in the world. Miniatures and handheld studies to large-scale installations, works in steel and stainless steel are accented with copper, stone, bronze, bones, found objects and wood.

His work is sold in galleries and international fairs and purchased by art collectors around the world including the art institute of Chicago, art gallery of Nova Scotia and municipality of London.

Richard wants us to feel connected to the shape and movements of his work and to engage in a conversation about it. Gordon and I did and are the proud owner of two of his sculptures.
